Description
This painting was a happy accident. I had some runny black paint left over and my hand was just itching to drag a brush-load of it into something. I did a little postcard but that really didn’t move me, so I grabbed some Heavy Paper and clipped it to my drawing board before streaking this running black paint on it.
It was like love at first sight!
The rest just seemed to follow and once all the colour was on, I wondered what it needed to finish it. Staring at it, I remembered living in a flat in North London. Growing up in a sprawling bungalow in the lush green spread of Santa Cruz Trinidad, I was ill prepared for flat-life.
I loved London but I hated living in a flat. I really hated having to tip toe in my heels; or wondering if the neighbours could hear me having sex; or trying to sleep through the booming bass vibrating through my bedroom floor; or holding my nose to get to my door because I had to pass the smoky fog of stale cigarette smoke in front my downstairs neighbour’s door to reach mine; or pretending I can’t see into the flats across the road lest I see something I shouldn’t. Some people absolutely love living in flats, I am definitely not one of them.
